How to stick to your New Year’s Resolutions

20th February, 2021

I think we can all agree when we say: 2020 was not exactly the greatest year for us. With a global pandemic, forest fires, racial injustice and World War 3 threats, it was easy for us to lose sight of what really mattered and overall lose hope in humanity. But with a new year ahead of us, let us allow our hope to rejuvenate, start anew and remain consistent with our goals. To help better understand these tips, we’ll use the example of losing weight, as it is one of my New year’s resolutions

1. make sure your goals are realistic and acheivable

If you want to achieve these goals by the end of the year, make sure that YOU are able to achieve them and that they are actually attainable with the given time frame. Your goals cannot be based on someone else’s lifestyle. Work according to your own pace.

2. be very specific, dont be vague

If I just say that I want to lose weight, it is very vague as i will not know where to start. there are many ways to lose weight and if I want to actually achieve them, I need to plan out what I need to do. For example, rather than saying I want to lose weight, I can instead write down that I want to lose my arm fat within the next 3 months. This acts as the foundation and helps me know what steps I need to take in order to stay fit, like searching for specific workout routines. It helps to know what exactly YOU want to achieve rather than writing it down for the sake of it.

3. SET DEADLINES

When you actually set deadlines on when you want to achieve a certain, you feel more pressured into actually doing. It comes from our innate need to avoid tardiness and the consequences. For example you plan to lose 2 kgs by March, it makes you feel more encouraged to achieve them and makes you feel less bad if you felt like you haven’t achieved much. What also helps is setting a timeline on what you want to complete by a specific date or even just noting down your progress. it acts as a confidence booster and helps to keep on the right track whenever you feel lost. It helps to increase our feelings of accomplishment, because you feel proud when look back and see all that you have achieved within this time span.

4. ask someone to help/remind you

When you rely on someone to remind you of your goals, you feel pressured to actually do them, so you won’t “disappoint’ them. we feel extremely guilty when we disappoint someone we look up to, so this acts as a good catalyst to do them faster. If you feel uncomfortable with telling anyone, you can always set reminders on your phone. There are many great apps that are designed for these type of purposes.

The only way these tips will actually work, if you want them to work. Make sure the goals you set are the goals you want to achieve and not what others think you should do. Don’t let your efforts be done in vain.
