Song Suggestion: Tongue Tied- Grouplove
Music has always been a constant in my life day in and day out, and that’s something I don’t believe will ever change. Sitting down every day for hours on repeat just to jam to songs on my simple old radio, never seems to fail my memory. I used to listen to a copious amount of music, that conveyed feelings that I could’ve never figured out being the age I was (such as love or struggle), but wanted to feel anyway with the pure devotion of wanting to be an adult soon. Looking back at those times, as stupid and ‘cringey’ as they had been, they spark a joy and happiness that could never be matched or explained, but you’ve probably already felt before.
We’ve all been there before: the pure sense of nostalgia and bliss you feel threading through old-school bangers and throwbacks. With the memories that start popping through your head as the song starts to play, you remember how you felt the first time you heard that melody and the thoughts you managed to capture within the song. The memories and feelings that arise so crystal clear that it’s evident that any time has even passed from those moment. It’s almost like a secret little time machine.
That’s the miracle of music: the pure emotion a song can make you feel is in itself breathtaking. The sadness, the joy, the bliss, the anger; songs in all their diversity have the ability to convey such immense feelings that they’re capable of allowing us to control our emotions to how we want to feel: confident, happy, sappy, calm. Being able to control the way you feel, control how you see and react to the world around you through just one song just brings such feelings of empowerment and strength that it’s hard to see why we couldn’t. The sheer control over music almost acts as a reassurance that WE are in control, despite how ‘out of our hands’ life can be. We need that reassurance and the confidence that it unconsciously gives us over our decisions, empowers us to keep going ever further and even if we don’t know it.
Listening to these throwbacks takes motivation to a whole new level. They have the power to encompass our very feelings within their depths, more than we’d ever even come to understand. The joy, nostalgia, happiness and sadness we engraved into these songs pushes a driving force of how things used to be. It’s something so astounding yet something so necessary in our lives. The series of emotions that ensue remind us of how enjoyable life used to be, but it also gives us hints that it could still be like that; we just have to look at things differently and enjoy what we can while cherishing what we had. That pure bliss and happiness of our reminiscings just gives more motivation and drive to do just that.
Music gives us the ability to cherish these moments we thought we forgot about and gives us a chance to remember what we were going though, feel what we had once felt, and take us back to those crazy moments we associated with these songs.
Let us make more memories to cherish and look back upon. So turn on your radios, playlists or maybe even karaoke machines and just take in your surroundings, this could be your favorite memory in the making.
